Kev Winser's mostly musical timeline

1963 – Born & brought up in very rural part of West Devon.

1970/71 – Discovered I loved music and I had 'rhythm'. Picked up drums and percussion. Never had lessons and self taught by playing along with to songs on the radio, on biscuit tins and cardboard boxes. Bowie, T Rex, Suzie Q, Slade and Glitter being faves. My granddad was a drummer in the local village brass band and I used to play with his kit when visiting. Dad played harmonica. We had a piano in the house but no one could play it??

72/73 - Found out was good on Xylophone and chime bars and performed solo for primary school assembly's and classes. Tried guitar, but didn't persist. I was left handed and no one really pointed out most guitars were right handed. Gave up, confused.

74-75-76 – Started writing songs aged 10/11 with terrible lyrics, glam rock/rock & roll type tunes. Started recording them on a cassette recorder with only biscuit tin drums, a Stylophone, and me making guitar noises and singing somehow. Started writing skits and making radio shows and Djing in my bedroom, with one rubbish record player and cassette player, with home made flashing lights. Put on 'club afternoons' in friends shed selling sweets and soft drinks too. Older brother was a mobile DJ. Brought a lot of music into the house. Mostly chart pop of the day but also older soul records, which I loved.

77 – Discovered John Peel on the radio and changed my whole world view. Decided I really did need to learn guitar...punk rock told me to. Mum bought me first guitar. Acoustic. Grrrr. Amped it up through an old radio and speaker and recorded things.  Made first cassette album called 'Calculated chaos' haha. Over dubbing tracks by using brother's cassette player and bouncing down between machines. Bought first electric guitar from friend of friend. Right handed Telecaster copy. Learnt it 'upside down'

78 – Aged 15. joined first band. 'CHARITY LUNCH' (CL) Playing guitar and singing, covering Buzzcocks, Ramones, Dr Feelgood, The Jam and writing our own songs. My first public appearance with them in local village hall at Xmas. Frank the bassist was in TV Smiths first band before he left Devon and formed The Adverts.

79 - 80 – Continued practising, writing songs and gigging with CL. Formed first school band 'THE XTRAGOODS' Played guitar, sang wrote songs. Joined another school band 'PRIVATE EYE' Played drums, wrote songs. Was in school choir and played drums & percussion for school orchestra. Made vinyl debut on recordings of two live performances with them - Joseph techincolourdreamcoat and Xmas concert.

81 – Went to art college to do DATEC Diploma in Graphics but Continued gigging with CL; parties, local venues etc.

82 – 83 - Joined three other bands on the side; 'SEPTEMBER' , 'THE TEXANS' & 'NINE PINT COGGIE' , doing rock & pop standards, C&W and trad English folk respectively; playing working mens clubs, holiday camps, halls, events etc etc. paid OK!
'Serious' band, CL still gigging, playing mostly my own post punk type songs now. (not really paid at all haha) Recorded first EP, Promoted own tour of village halls in the county (unheard of then) got regional press and media coverage over my views on the public not supporting local, original bands and music scene (yeah was even worse then, even though I was also kinda double agent ) Got played on and interviewed on BBC Radio Devon, Cornwall & Bristol.

84 – Aged 21, spent time in London between signing on in Devon. Got audition drumming for an ex-chart act, didn't get the gig. CL got a mention by John Peel after I left him a demo in a tupperware box with a sandwich at BBC reception for him. Never got a JP session. Came back to Devon. Left Devon for Bath with girlfriend at the time, as I unemployed art student, frustrated with and burnt out on bands. Kept hand in a bit with local jams but never attempted to form band in Bath, even though the talent, healthy scene and contacts were there. It was home of 'Tears for Fears' then remember.

85 – 86 - 87 - Got work as gallery manager and technician at the RPS (Royal Photographic Society) National Centre of Photography in Bath. Worked on exhibitions for and met many national and international photographers and visual artists, including, Martin Parr, Ralph Steadman, Don McCullin, Bert Hardy, David Puttnam and Linda (and Paul) McCartney. Infact worked and hung out with both of them for a week hanging her show, I was the only official snapper allowed at the opening. Also met Beatles producer, George Martin, Beatles cover artist Peter Blake a very little Stella (now famous fashion designer) Was quite a week. Linda also paid me good money for some private work too.

Did RPS picture archive research, including Peter Gabriel and photo work for local bands and performers too. Hung out in Moles club too much, saw, met, hung out with loads of bands but never got tempted to form one. Got more into Djing inspired by second wave hip hop and acid house. Started making tracks with drum machine and putting together what are now called mash-ups, on an Amstrad Studio 100 machine. Used alot of 'pause breaks' as couldn't afford a sampler haha. Now obscure indie 80s indie band 'The hollowmen' used to use one of my tracks as their walk on tune.

88 – 89 – 90 - Decided I ought to do first degree, having put off for many reasons. Got a place at Middlesex Poly (now Uni and formally the infamous Hornsey art college and poly) doing contemporary cultural studies. Very hip subject at the time. Got well into academic post modern critical theory but also Studied modules in electronic music, Indian & African music and dance. Formed the 'independent media group', published our own fanzine, promoted gigs. Started 'INFECTED SENSES' side project and began doing messed up noise and experimental soundscapes and distributing through the underground mail art network. Had things put out on small independent labels in USA and the like. I was also more active with the regular Djing, rocking house parties around north London, student union nights etc but as my girlfriend was at uni in Plymouth, I would go there during holidays and met two guys, Rich & Steve, with whom I formed 'THE WHIPPING BOYS' (TWB) as drummer at first. Moved back to Devon and to Plymouth when I graduated

91 – 92 – 93 - TWB get quite popular on Plymouth scene. I took over on lead guitar, Played gigs at the Uni and various Benefit shows. Refused to play pub circuit but...got support slots to indie bands like 'Bob' and The Retreat. Recorded some tracks in Bristol, produced by Dave MacDonald of 'Portishead'. Were Included on the bill for a new band show case in London's 'Rock Garden' where we met band Airhead, who really liked us and were going to suggest us to their label but were then dropped themselves. Included in BBC Bristol's new band show case at the famous Fleece & firkin. Got airtime and interviewed. Got involved in an album project by Datlight Studios to promote bands from Devon and were included on the CD distributed 'to the business' and made avaialble in record shops. Played at release show relayed to regional radio. Put out several cassette only releases to rave regional reviews. Voted most promising demo/band in Regional listings mag. Mentioned in a 'one to watch' type column of national 'Zine' magazine, who'd also featured Shed 7 and Supergrass in same feature, though we still received several reject letters from record companies. Got excited after meeting with a tour manager about possible gigs in Japan. They never happened. Irish band 'Whipping boy' became better known. We got fed up with it all. Steve and rich left Plymouth. I finished off some recordings and put it all to rest.

94- 95 - Was working at Plymouth Arts Centre and a local school but joined punk/riot Grrrl band 'PERSECUTION COMPLEX' as drummer. Recorded some tracks. Got sent around labels and agents. Favourably reviewed in Melody Maker magazine. “This is what the kids want” they said. Asked to do several dates and mini tour with Riot Grrrl heroes, 'Huggy Bear'. Lauded by and hung out  with Graham Coxon of Blur a bit that summer (he joined us on tour as he was going out with one of the women in Huggy Bear then) Were asked to support 'These Animal Men' on first three dates of short Autumn national tour, the week they themselves were on top of the pops. Were Melody Maker gig of the week. Also supported other now obscure 90s indie bands. Tape fell into hands of Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth via journalist friend. Received encouraging fan mail in the form of a post card from Thurston Moore. Asked us to send him more recordings. We never did. We broke up as other members moved to London and kick started the much hyped but doomed 'Romo' movement (the mid 90s fake new romantic revival) and became backing band for Boy Georges 'The Twin' project.

96 – Fell into clinical depression after all this (though didn't realised it at the time, coz peeps didn't talk so much about it like they do now) I had pretty major nervous breakdown and long term girlfriend and I split up. Most of '96 'in recovery'

'97 – Mostly still 'in recovery' but got it together to get job in Plymouth HMV record shop and vowed not to get involved in bands again...again. Started writing for regional listings mags 'Scene' and 'Event South west'. Had own column for Demos and Singles reviews and interviewed musos like, Matt Bellamy from local Devon boys made good, Muse.

'98 – Some how got involved in a CSV media training scheme based at BBC South West studios in Plymouth.

'99 – Got regular freelance work with BBC. Worked at TwoFour productions as researcher on Channel 4 afternoon programme, 'Collectors Lot'. Produced and presented radio show on RSL station, Eclipse FM.

2001 – Got full time staff job with BBC Radio Devon. My DJing was also picking up again. Rockin' parties and running own nights 'Sophisticated Boom Boom' and 'Punk to funk' also became in-house jock for the infamous 'Westward bound' company fetish nights, which I remained so for 10 years.

2003 – Got 'promotion' to producer and on air side kick of BBC Devon flagship mid morning Judi Spiers show. 5th most popular regional show in the country. Had my own shows too. Started a punk club night, MDC, with mates, including Darren Johns, then p/t NME hack and now of band Crazy Arm and regional punk stalwart Chris Wilshire of Ruptured Ambitions label. Ran for 4 years.

2004 – 10 – BBC producer job became my life. Started promoting more new and live music on the station. Met and did sessions with many famous people and bands, national and local. Got involved in regional setting up and beginnings of the BBC 'Introducing' brand.

2010 – Started Djing at 'Trash city' indie night at The Cavern club in Exeter. Turned myself into 'DJ LOUIE LOUIE' . Got trial run as DJ at The Deluxe Diner in the legendary Shangri-la area of Glastonbury festival, after meeting some randoms at another festival. I killed it, They liked me, have now been a resident there for ten years!

2011 – 18 - Started hugely successful vintage club night in Exeter called 'Blow your wig!' Queues round the block, one in one out kinda thing. Celeb visitors, Guardian guide club 'pick of the week' stuff. Played other festivals such as, Port Elliot, Farmfest, Aeon, Wonder fields and I am also regular DJ for The Bimble Inn Marquee at Beautiful days festival. Played to over 8000 on Plymouth Hoe as part of the Americas cup. Supported Djs like Craig Charles funk & soul show, Norman Jay, Grand Master Flash and headline other local events. Presented awards at South West music awards ceremonies.

2015 – Took voluntary redundancy from BBC and sat back for a while. Started 'THE VOOTUBES' with some mates. Just a fun, party, Punk pop covers band but with a twist and 'best band in Exeter' according to some. Started work at 'Soundwaves music project' for young adults with learning difficulties. Project was Part funded by Coldplay.

2017 – NOW - Revived my 'INFECTED SENSES' project, Started the 'MUSIC IS MURDER' collective. Promoting bi-monthly gigs of out there, experimental, non linear, post digital, avant noise and sound art. Getting non traditional musos out of their bedrooms and social media groups and giving them a gig. Subconscious idea was to shake up the local music scene a bit, away from and a little in reaction to the seemingly endless 'sensitive singer-songwriter' acoustic troubadours, indie land fill and provincial open mic nights usually promoting 'Britain's Got talent' or Ed Sheeran type wannabes. Yes, we're a little bit anti-music music. Somehow got associated with the whole 'New Weird Britain' thing that was hyped by certain journalists. Ironically received small arts grant from Exeter City Council to launch label and first physical CD release Dec 2019.

2019 - Became one of the official DJs and comperes for Butlins Alternative music weekends at Skegness & Minehead. Warming up for and introducing vintage punk legends like, The Stranglers, Undertones, Angelic upstarts, The Blockheads, From The Jam, 999, Tom Robinson band etc etc .

2020– Studied for MA in sound Design?? :)
